Where did the Rabbit Ears Motel get it’s name?

We’ve heard a lot of humorous self-interpretations on this subject from guests over the years, but here’s the true story:

Named for the Rabbit Ears Pass that straddles the Continental Divide, taken from nearby Rabbit Ears Peak, a mountain in the Park Range to the north that is prominently visible from the east side of the pass during good weather and distinctly resembles a rabbit’s ears. The pass separates the upper basin of the Yampa River on the west from North Park and the upper basin of the North Platte River on the east. U.S. Highway 40 travels over the pass between Steamboat Springs and Kremmling. After crossing the Divide westbound, the road dips briefly and then reaches its highest point before descending gently to the west summit and then dropping toward Steamboat Springs.

As you enter the beautiful Yampa Valley, for the first time, as a returning guest, or coming home, the Rabbit Ears Motel historic sign gives it’s viewer the same warm welcome of “you’ve arrived in Steamboat” as crossing the pass does to drivers. You’ve made it! We hope you’ll enjoy your stay, and may it be one of many “home comings”.
